A waltz often serves as the formal opening dance in a traditional quinceañera.
The quinceañera may dance with her father or another honored escort before joining her court of honor. The waltz gives the reception a formal presentation and allows the celebrant to be introduced publicly to family and guests.
Many celebrations also include a choreographed surprise dance later in the event. That performance may use pop, Latin, hip-hop, or other styles, so it should not be confused with the traditional opening waltz.
The dance custom varies widely. Some families replace the father-daughter dance with another escort, use a different style, or skip formal dancing. A waltz is common because of its ceremonial history, not because every quinceañera must include one.
