A waltz is the dance most commonly associated with a traditional quinceañera and her court.
The formal dance is often called the vals, the Spanish word for waltz. The quinceañera and her attendants may rehearse a choreographed routine and perform it during the reception. In some traditions, the honoree dances first with her father or another important escort before joining the court.
The routine can be highly formal, but contemporary celebrations frequently mix the waltz with popular music and modern choreography. Families may choose regional dances or a medley that reflects the honoree’s tastes.
Salsa, tango, and flamenco may be performed at celebrations, but they are not the standard name for the traditional court dance. The canonical term is waltz, or vals in Spanish.
