A traditional quinceañera may begin with a Catholic Mass before the reception.
This service is often called a thanksgiving Mass because the celebrant and family give thanks for her life and ask for continued guidance. Depending on local custom, it may take place in a parish church or in another suitable venue.
The Mass is not universal. Quinceañeras are also celebrated by families from other Christian traditions, by nonreligious families, and by families who hold only a secular ceremony. The reception, formal clothing, court, music, and symbolic rituals can therefore appear without a Catholic service.
A quinceañera is a cultural coming-of-age celebration rather than a sacrament. It should not be confused with confirmation, which is a separate Catholic sacrament with its own religious purpose and preparation requirements.
