A traditional quinceañera marks the honoree reaching age 15.
The celebration is a Latin American rite of passage for a girl’s fifteenth birthday. The Spanish term combines quince, meaning fifteen, with a suffix referring to a female person or celebration. Families often combine a religious service, a formal reception, music, dancing, and symbolic presentations.
The event is not identical in every country or family. Some celebrations emphasize Catholic practice, while others are primarily cultural or social. A quinceañera is also not the same as a legal adulthood ceremony: the legal age of adulthood varies by country, and the party itself does not change a person’s legal status.
