In a traditional quinceañera ritual, the honoree may receive a doll as her “last doll.”
The last doll symbolizes the end of childhood and the transition represented by turning 15. In some families, the father or another relative presents it during the reception. The doll may resemble the honoree, match the event’s colors, or be specially dressed for the occasion.
This custom is often called the última muñeca in Spanish. It is not included in every quinceañera, because celebrations vary by country, family, religion, budget, and personal preference. Some modern families replace the symbolic doll with another keepsake or omit the ritual entirely.
The custom is sometimes confused with the shoe-change ceremony, which has a different symbolism. In that ritual, the honoree’s flat shoes may be replaced with high heels, emphasizing the passage into a more mature stage of life.
