Catholicism is the Christian denomination most commonly associated with the Mass in a traditional quinceañera religious service.
Many quinceañeras include a Catholic Mass or a thanksgiving service in a church. In that setting, the honoree may receive a blessing, offer thanks, and participate with her family and court. The service is commonly known in Spanish as a Misa de Acción de Gracias, or Mass of Thanksgiving.
The religious component varies widely. A family may celebrate a quinceañera without a church service, and Protestant or other Christian families may adapt the ceremony to their own worship traditions. The party, formal entrance, dances, and reception are cultural customs rather than required Catholic rites.
A quinceañera should therefore not be described as a sacrament equivalent to baptism, confirmation, or marriage. It is a cultural coming-of-age celebration that can include Catholic elements. Local parishes may also have preparation rules, such as meetings or requirements for participation in religious education.
