A traditional quinceañera celebrates a girl’s 15th birthday.
The Spanish word quinceañera refers to the celebrant, while quince años names the birthday and celebration itself. The event traditionally marks a transition from childhood toward young womanhood, although modern families interpret that transition in different ways.
The celebration commonly combines a religious service, a formal reception, music, dancing, and symbolic rituals. Customs vary considerably by country, region, family, and denomination, so not every quinceañera includes the same program.
The fifteenth birthday is the defining age, not a universal legal change of status. In many places, adulthood begins at a different age, and the celebration does not itself create any civil or religious legal status.
