In a traditional quinceañera, how many young women usually make up the court of honor?

The story behind the answer

A traditional quinceañera court of honor usually includes 14 young women, together with the quinceañera, making 15 girls in all.

The number symbolizes the celebrant’s 15 years. The court may be called the damas, the Spanish word for ladies, and its members commonly participate in a formal entrance, choreographed dances, or other ceremonial parts of the celebration.

Traditional courts can also include male attendants, often called chambelanes. The exact size and composition are not fixed worldwide, however. Modern families may choose a smaller court, an all-gender group, relatives, friends, or no court at all.

The court should therefore be understood as a customary pattern, not a requirement. The number 14 is the conventional figure in descriptions of a traditional court because the quinceañera herself completes the symbolic group of 15.
