A traditional quinceañera court typically includes 14 damas, or female attendants.
The number connects the court to the celebrant’s age: the quinceañera plus 14 attendants makes a symbolic group of 15. In a full traditional court, the damas are often paired with 14 male attendants known as chambelanes. The court may participate in the entrance, formal photographs, choreographed dances, and other ceremonial moments.
This arrangement is a convention rather than a universal rule. Many modern families use smaller courts because of cost, venue size, scheduling, or personal preference. Some celebrations include friends of different genders, while others have no court at all.
The terms dama and chambelán are Spanish labels whose use varies regionally. Therefore, “14 damas” describes the classic format, not a requirement that applies to every quinceañera held today.
