A Catholic Mass may precede a traditional quinceañera celebration, especially in families that observe the event as a religious milestone.
This service is often called a Misa de Acción de Gracias, or Thanksgiving Mass. During it, the celebrant and family may give thanks, receive a blessing, and participate in prayers connected with the transition into a new stage of life.
The religious service is not universal. Quinceañeras are also held by families from other Christian traditions, by people with different faith backgrounds, and by secular families. The party may therefore exist without a Mass, or a family may choose another form of ceremony.
A quinceañera Mass is not the same as a wedding. It does not marry the celebrant, and its purpose is generally thanksgiving, blessing, and family celebration rather than a marital rite.
