In a traditional quinceañera ceremony, what kind of service may precede the party?

The story behind the answer

In a traditional quinceañera ceremony, a Catholic Mass may precede the party.

This service is often called a Misa de Acción de Gracias, or Thanksgiving Mass. During it, the celebrant may express gratitude for her life and ask for blessings for the next stage of life. A priest can also offer guidance or a blessing to the young woman and her family.

The religious component reflects the strong Catholic influence found in many communities where quinceañeras developed. However, it is not universal. Some families hold a nonreligious ceremony, a different faith service, or only a reception.

A quinceañera should therefore not be confused with a sacrament such as baptism or marriage. The Mass is a possible religious setting for the celebration, while the broader tradition is cultural and can be adapted to different beliefs.
