A traditional quinceañera often begins with a Catholic Mass, sometimes called a Misa de acción de gracias.
The service gives the celebration a religious setting and allows the quinceañera and her family to give thanks for her life and future. A priest may bless the quinceañera, and family members or attendants can participate in readings and other parts of the liturgy.
The Mass is not universal. Quinceañeras are also held by families who are not Catholic, and many celebrations take place only as social or cultural events. Customs vary considerably by country, parish, family, and denomination.
The religious service should not be confused with the reception. The reception commonly includes formal entrances, a court of honor, a meal, music, dancing, and symbolic traditions. In some communities, the church service and party occur on different days.
