A traditional quinceañera candle ceremony uses 15 candles, representing people who have been important in the celebrant’s life.
The celebrant may light the candles herself or have them presented by relatives and friends. Short speeches or dedications can accompany the candles, making the ritual a personal review of family relationships, friendship, and gratitude.
The number connects the ceremony to the celebrant’s fifteenth birthday, but the candles are not simply birthday-cake decorations. They form part of a symbolic presentation honoring a selected group of people. Customs vary by family, country, and religious background, so not every modern quinceañera includes this ritual.
The candle ceremony is also distinct from the changing-of-the-shoes ritual and from the presentation of a last doll. Those are separate traditions that may appear at the same celebration.
