In a traditional Mexican quinceañera, a Catholic Mass may precede the birthday reception.
This church service is often called a misa de acción de gracias, meaning a thanksgiving Mass. During it, the celebrant gives thanks for her life and receives blessings from the priest and congregation. Family members and the ceremonial court may attend.
The Mass reflects the strong historical connection between quinceañeras and Catholic communities in Mexico and other parts of Latin America. It is not required for every modern quinceañera, however. Secular celebrations, interfaith families, and families from non-Catholic backgrounds may hold a different ceremony or no religious service.
The Mass and reception are separate parts of the event. The reception generally includes food, music, dancing, speeches, and symbolic presentations.
