The Spanish word quinceañera commonly names the fifteenth-birthday celebration itself.
The same word can also refer to the young woman whose birthday is being marked. This double use is normal in Spanish and in much English-language writing about the tradition. The event may also be called fiesta de quince años or quince años, especially in descriptions emphasizing the birthday party.
A quinceañera often brings together elements from family celebration, formal presentation, dance, and Catholic practice. Some families hold a Mass before the reception, while others choose a secular ceremony or a party without a religious service.
The celebration is not identical everywhere. Customs in Mexico, Puerto Rico, the United States, Central America, and South America can differ in clothing, music, food, and ritual. Treating one regional version as the only authentic form can therefore create confusion.
