In a quinceañera, the female attendants in the honoree’s court are commonly called damas.
Damas is the Spanish plural of dama, meaning lady. A quinceañera court may include young women who accompany the honoree during the entrance, formal presentation, photographs, and choreographed dances.
The court is often paired with male attendants called chambelanes, although the size and composition of the group differ widely. Some celebrations use an all-female court, a mixed group, or no formal court at all.
Damas should not be confused with madrinas. Madrinas are godmothers or sponsoring women who may help provide items or services for the celebration; they are not normally the young attendants who make up the court.
