In a quinceañera, the Spanish term commonly used for the girl’s female sponsor or godmother is madrina.
Madrina is the feminine form related to padrino, and both terms can describe people who support or sponsor a celebration. A madrina may contribute money, clothing, jewelry, flowers, or another important item, depending on the family’s arrangements.
The word is broader than the specific event. In Spanish-speaking cultures, madrina can also mean a godmother or female sponsor in other religious and social contexts. For that reason, the title does not automatically identify one universal quinceañera duty.
Madrina is different from dama, who is a female member of the court. A person may support the celebration in more than one way, but the traditional labels refer to sponsorship and attendance respectively.
