In a quinceañera, what religious service may take place before the reception?

The story behind the answer

In a quinceañera, a Catholic Mass may take place before the reception.

This service is often called a Misa de Acción de Gracias, or Thanksgiving Mass. The celebrant and family may give thanks, receive a blessing, and participate in a ceremony held at a Catholic church before the social celebration.

The religious service reflects the strong Catholic influence in many regions where quinceañeras developed, including Mexico and parts of Central and South America. However, the celebration is not exclusively Catholic. Families may hold a secular event, use another religious setting, or combine cultural traditions in different ways.

A Mass is therefore a common possible component, not a universal requirement. The reception, formal clothing, dances, and symbolic rituals can occur independently of a church service.
