A traditional quinceañera may include a Catholic Mass for the honoree.
This service is commonly called a Misa de acción de gracias, or Mass of thanksgiving. During it, the young woman may give thanks for her life and family, and relatives or sponsors may accompany her. The religious service is followed by a reception or party in many families.
Not every quinceañera includes Mass. The tradition is practiced by people with different religious commitments, and secular celebrations are also common. Even within Catholic families, the order and details of the service can vary by parish and country.
A quinceañera Mass should not be confused with Confirmation or Baptism. Those are separate Catholic sacraments, while the quinceañera celebration is a cultural milestone rather than a sacrament.
