A waltz is the ceremonial dance often performed by a quinceañera and her court.
The dance is usually rehearsed in advance and may begin with the honoree dancing with members of her court or with a parent. Choreography can be formal and traditional, or it can incorporate contemporary music and additional dance styles. The waltz’s role is ceremonial rather than competitive.
The waltz is separate from the wider reception, where guests may dance to regional, popular, or recorded music. Families frequently customize the presentation to reflect local taste and the honoree’s personality.
Not every quinceañera includes a waltz, and the term does not identify one fixed routine. Some celebrations use a surprise dance or a medley instead. Even so, “waltz” remains the standard concise answer for the traditional formal dance associated with the event.
