Female attendants in a quinceañera court are traditionally called damas.
Damas is the Spanish plural of dama, meaning “lady.” They form part of the celebrant’s court and may accompany her during the entrance, formal photographs, dances, and other scheduled portions of the event.
The court often includes both damas and male attendants. Its size is not fixed: families choose the participants according to local custom, personal preference, and the scale of the celebration. Modern quinceañeras may also use mixed-gender or nontraditional courts.
Damas are sometimes confused with madrinas. Madrinas are female sponsors or adult supporters, while damas are usually the young attendants in the quinceañera’s court. Terminology can vary across countries and families, so not every celebration uses a court or these titles.
