A quinceañera traditionally celebrates a girl's 15th birthday.
The word comes from the Spanish phrase quince años, meaning “fifteen years.” In many Latin American communities, the birthday is treated as a major family and cultural milestone rather than an ordinary birthday party.
The celebration is often described as marking a transition from childhood toward young womanhood. Customs vary widely by country, family, religion, and budget, so not every quinceañera includes the same rituals. Some families emphasize a church service, while others focus mainly on the reception.
The event is sometimes confused with a legal coming-of-age ceremony. It does not itself change a person's legal age or grant adult rights; those depend on the laws of the country involved.
