A quinceañera traditionally celebrates a girl’s 15th birthday and transition into young womanhood.
The word quinceañera comes from the Spanish quince años, meaning “fifteen years.” The celebration is especially associated with Latin American families and communities, as well as Hispanic communities in the United States. Although customs differ by country and family, the age remains the defining feature of the tradition.
A quinceañera is not simply a birthday party with a particular theme. Traditional versions may include a religious service, a formal entrance, a court of honor, special dances, symbolic gifts, and a reception. Modern celebrations often adapt or omit individual elements while retaining the fifteenth-birthday milestone.
The celebration is sometimes compared with a sweet sixteen, but the two traditions have different cultural histories. A quinceañera is tied specifically to the fifteenth birthday and to Spanish-speaking cultural traditions, whereas a sweet sixteen is generally associated with the sixteenth birthday.
