Damas is the Spanish word commonly used for the girls who accompany the honoree in a quinceañera court.
The word dama means “lady,” and damas is its plural. A court may include friends, relatives, or other selected attendants who participate in the entrance, formal dances, photographs, and other parts of the program.
The size and composition of a court vary widely. Some celebrations have several damas and male attendants, while others have a small group or no court at all. Clothing may coordinate with the honoree’s dress, but local customs and family preferences determine the final appearance.
Damas should not be confused with madrinas, who are adult sponsors or honored supporters, or with the honoree herself. Spanish terminology also varies between regions, so an individual celebration may use different labels while keeping the same general role.
