In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the mischievous fairy servant of Oberon is Puck.
Puck is also called Robin Goodfellow, a name drawn from English folklore. Shakespeare presents him as Oberon’s quick-witted attendant and assigns him several tasks, including fetching a magical flower whose juice causes instant infatuation.
Puck’s mistakes drive much of the play’s comic confusion. He accidentally enchants Lysander instead of Demetrius and later transforms the actor Nick Bottom’s head into that of a donkey. These pranks make him mischievous, but he ultimately helps restore order.
Robin, Caliban, and Ariel are common mix-ups. Robin is Puck’s alternate name, while Caliban belongs to The Tempest and Ariel is a spirit in the same play. Shakespeare’s Puck combines fairy folklore, comic mischief, and theatrical chaos.
