Jeff Bezos founded the Bezos Earth Fund in 2020 with a $10 billion commitment.
Bezos announced the climate-focused philanthropic initiative in February 2020, pledging up to $10 billion to help address climate change. The commitment was presented as a long-term effort supporting scientists, activists, nonprofit organizations, and other groups working on environmental solutions.
The fund’s first major grants were announced in November 2020. Bezos committed $791 million to 16 established environmental organizations, including the Environmental Defense Fund, Natural Resources Defense Council, The Nature Conservancy, World Resources Institute, and World Wildlife Fund. Several of those groups received $100 million each.
The Earth Fund is distinct from Bezos’s other philanthropic projects. His Day 1 Funds focus on homelessness and early-childhood education, while Bezos Academy operates tuition-free preschools. The Earth Fund’s later work expanded into nature conservation, food-system reform, landscape restoration, and climate-related justice. The $10 billion figure describes Bezos’s pledged commitment, not a single one-time payment made in 2020.
