In 2017, which Chinese chemical company acquired Syngenta?

The story behind the answer

In 2017, the Chinese chemical company ChemChina acquired Syngenta.

Syngenta is a Swiss agricultural-science company formed in 2000 through the merger of Novartis Agribusiness and AstraZeneca Agrochemicals. It develops crop-protection products, seeds, and related agricultural technologies. Its business made the company strategically important to ChemChina, a Chinese state-owned chemical group seeking a larger international position in agriculture.

ChemChina agreed to purchase Syngenta after announcing a bid in February 2016. The offer was worth about $43 billion, making it the largest foreign acquisition by a Chinese company at the time. Regulators in the United States, European Union, and elsewhere reviewed the transaction and required divestitures of certain pesticide assets to address competition concerns. The deal closed on June 26, 2017.

A common mix-up is naming Bayer or Monsanto, both major agricultural competitors that were involved in other large deals and attempted combinations. Syngenta’s later agricultural operations became part of the broader Syngenta Group, which also includes ADAMA and other businesses.
