In 2015, which hotel chain acquired Starwood Hotels & Resorts?

The story behind the answer

In 2015, Marriott acquired Starwood Hotels & Resorts, creating the world’s largest hotel company at the time.

The agreement, announced in November 2015, valued the transaction at about $12.2 billion. Marriott’s offer beat a competing proposal from a consortium led by China’s Anbang Insurance Group after Starwood briefly attempted to end the Marriott deal.

The acquisition closed on September 23, 2016. It brought Starwood brands including Sheraton, Westin, W Hotels, St. Regis and Le Méridien into Marriott’s portfolio. The combined company operated thousands of properties across more than 100 countries.

A common mix-up is the year: the deal was announced in 2015 but completed in 2016. Marriott later combined Starwood Preferred Guest with Marriott Rewards and The Ritz-Carlton Rewards to create Marriott Bonvoy in 2019.
