Martins earned the award for a spectacular chip scored for Seattle Sounders FC against the San Jose Earthquakes on May 17, 2014. From a difficult angle near the end line, he lifted the ball over goalkeeper Jon Busch and into the far side of the net. The unusual trajectory made the goal one of the season’s most memorable finishes.

The award was the 2014 AT&T MLS Goal of the Year, selected through a fan voting process after a field of 64 goals had been narrowed down. Martins received 51.82% of the submitted ballots, giving Seattle a major individual highlight during a strong season.

Martins was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and had already played in major European leagues, including spells with Inter Milan, Newcastle United, and Wolfsburg.
