In 2008, the Foo Fighters won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album for “Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace.” The album was the band’s sixth studio release and was recognized at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards.
Released in September 2007, the record combines the Foo Fighters’ familiar loud guitar-driven rock with quieter acoustic and melodic passages. Its songs include “The Pretender,” “Long Road to Ruin,” and “Let It Die.” The album was produced by Gil Norton, who had also worked with the band on “The Colour and the Shape.”
The Foo Fighters had several nominations at the 2008 ceremony. They also won Best Hard Rock Performance for “The Pretender,” making the night especially successful for the band. Dave Grohl founded the group after Nirvana ended following Kurt Cobain’s death.
Readers sometimes confuse Best Rock Album with Album of the Year. “Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace” won the rock-category award; Herbie Hancock’s “River: The Joni Letters” won Album of the Year in 2008.
