In 1998, Bob Dylan won the Album of the Year Grammy for Time Out of Mind. The album, released in 1997, was widely viewed as a major late-career comeback and introduced a dark, atmospheric sound shaped by producer Daniel Lanois.
Time Out of Mind included songs such as “Love Sick,” “Not Dark Yet,” and “Make You Feel My Love.” Its themes of aging, isolation, mortality, and spiritual unease gave the record a reflective mood, while the layered production placed Dylan’s weathered voice at the center of the songs.
The Grammy recognition was especially notable because Dylan had spent much of the early 1990s outside the center of mainstream pop attention. At the 40th Grammy Awards, Time Out of Mind also won Best Contemporary Folk Album, and “Cold Irons Bound” won Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. The album is sometimes confused with the 1998 ceremony year: it was released in 1997, but it received its major Grammy honors in 1998.
