In '1984', what is the name of the protagonist's forbidden love interest?

The story behind the answer

In 1984, the protagonist’s forbidden love interest is Julia.

Julia is the young woman who begins a secret relationship with Winston Smith, the novel’s protagonist. She works at the Ministry of Truth and publicly appears to be a dedicated Party member, even participating in the Junior Anti-Sex League. Privately, however, she rejects the Party’s restrictions on sex and uses small acts of disobedience to preserve a sense of personal freedom.

Julia first sends Winston a note declaring her love, leading to a clandestine affair in the countryside and later in a rented room above Mr. Charrington’s shop. Their relationship becomes Winston’s first major act of rebellion because the Party seeks to control not only public behaviour but also private loyalty and desire.

Julia and Winston differ in their attitude toward resistance. Winston is preoccupied with history, language, and the possibility of political revolution, while Julia is practical and focused on everyday pleasures. The Thought Police eventually arrest both of them. After torture and re-education, they meet again but no longer love one another. Julia has no revealed surname in Orwell’s novel.
