Answer
The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow
Answer
The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow
Ichabod Crane is from Washington Irving’s short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”
First published in 1820, the story appears in Irving’s collection The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. It follows Ichabod Crane, a tall, awkward, highly superstitious schoolmaster who lives in a rural settlement near Tarrytown, New York. He becomes interested in Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter of a wealthy farmer, but must contend with Abraham “Brom Bones” Van Brunt, his confident local rival.
After attending a harvest gathering at the Van Tassel farm, Ichabod hears frightening tales about the Headless Horseman, a ghost said to be a decapitated Hessian soldier. Riding home at night, he encounters a mysterious headless rider and disappears after a terrifying chase. His hat and a smashed pumpkin are later found near a bridge.
Irving leaves the explanation deliberately uncertain. The Horseman may be supernatural, but Brom’s suspicious laughter suggests that the pursuit could have been an elaborate practical joke. Ichabod is also distinct from the later fictional police detective named Ichabod Crane in modern adaptations.
