How wide is the Statue of Liberty's mouth?

The story behind the answer

The Statue of Liberty’s mouth is 3 feet wide.

That measurement is about 0.91 meter across. It is one of the statue’s many astonishing scale comparisons: the index finger is about 8 feet long, the nose is roughly 4 feet 6 inches long, and the head measures 17 feet 3 inches from chin to cranium.

The mouth’s size is easy to underestimate because visitors usually view the figure from far below, on Liberty Island or from boats in New York Harbor. The statue itself rises 151 feet 1 inch from heel to torch, while the full monument reaches 305 feet 1 inch from ground level to the torch’s tip.

The statue was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated in 1886. Its copper exterior is only about 3/32 inch thick, but an internal framework gives the enormous figure its shape and strength.
