How was Goober Pyle related to Gomer Pyle?

Goober Pyle was Gomer Pyle’s cousin. The two characters are extended-family members in the Mayberry universe, and both are portrayed as good-natured, somewhat naive mechanics connected to Wally’s Filling Station.

Goober was played by George Lindsey and was introduced on The Andy Griffith Show after Gomer became an established character. Lindsey originally played the character as Goober Beasley, but the surname was later changed to Pyle to make the family connection to Gomer explicit. Goober’s role helped fill the comic space left when Gomer moved to his own Marine Corps spin-off.

The cousins rarely appear together on the original series. Their most notable shared appearance is the episode “Fun Girls,” and they later meet in related television appearances, including Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. and the reunion film Return to Mayberry.
