How tall is the Washington Monument, measured from the ground to its tip?

The story behind the answer

The Washington Monument is 555 feet 5⅛ inches tall from the ground to its tip.

The obelisk in Washington, D.C., honors George Washington, the first president of the United States. Architect Robert Mills designed it, and construction began in 1848. Work stopped for years because of political disputes, financial problems, and the Civil War, creating a visible change in the stone’s color about one-third of the way up.

The monument was completed in 1884 and dedicated on February 21, 1885. It opened to the public in 1888. For many years it was the world’s tallest building or structure, but it was surpassed by the Eiffel Tower in 1889.

The measurement is often rounded to 555 feet. The more precise figure includes the aluminum tip at the top. The monument is also the world’s tallest predominantly stone-built structure, a distinction separate from being the tallest building overall.
