How tall is the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building?

The story behind the answer

The Burj Khalifa is 828 metres tall.

Located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the Burj Khalifa has been the world’s tallest building since its completion in 2010. Its height is measured to the architectural top, including the tall spire. The building has 163 above-ground floors.

Construction began in 2004, and the tower opened on 4 January 2010. It was designed by the Chicago-based firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, with Adrian Smith serving as the chief architect. The project was originally known as Burj Dubai before its official opening name honoured Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

A frequent confusion is between the building’s height and its highest occupied floor. The 828-metre figure refers to the full architectural height, while usable floors and observation decks reach lower levels. The tower forms the centrepiece of the large Downtown Dubai development.
