Rembrandt van Rijn was 63 years old when he died.
He was born on 15 July 1606 and died on 4 October 1669 in Amsterdam. Because his death came less than three months after his birthday, he was 63 rather than 64. He was buried in the Westerkerk in Amsterdam, in an unmarked rented grave.
Rembrandt’s final years were financially difficult. He had declared insolvency in 1656, and his possessions and house were sold. Despite these problems, he continued painting, drawing, and making prints. His late works are known for their broad brushwork, psychological intensity, and unusually personal treatment of biblical and portrait subjects.
His age is sometimes miscalculated by subtracting the birth year from the death year without checking the dates. The simple year difference is 63, and the calendar dates confirm that he had already passed his sixty-third birthday.
