How old was Leonardo da Vinci when he died?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci was 67 years old when he died.

Leonardo was born in Vinci, near Florence, on 15 April 1452 and died on 2 May 1519 at Clos Lucé in France. Because his birthday had already passed that year, he was 67 at the time of his death. Historical accounts traditionally suggest that he may have died following a stroke, although the exact medical cause cannot be established with certainty.

His final years were spent in France under the patronage of King Francis I, who had invited him there around 1516. Leonardo lived at Clos Lucé near the royal residence at Amboise and continued working on drawings, engineering ideas and paintings, although illness increasingly limited him.

A famous story says that Francis I held Leonardo’s head as he died, but historians consider that scene questionable. Leonardo’s age is not disputed, even though details surrounding his final moments are partly shaped by later biographies and artistic legend.
