How old is the celebrant traditionally honored by a quinceañera?

The story behind the answer

A quinceañera traditionally honors a girl’s 15th birthday.

The Spanish word quinceañera refers both to the celebrant and, commonly, to the birthday celebration itself. The event marks an important transition from childhood toward young womanhood in many Latin American communities and families of Latin American heritage.

Celebrations vary widely. Some include a formal ceremony, a large reception, special clothing, a choreographed dance, and symbolic gifts. Others are smaller family gatherings or modern parties with few traditional elements. The age remains the defining feature, even when the program changes.

A quinceañera is not the same as a sweet sixteen, although both can be elaborate coming-of-age birthday parties. In some families, the celebration may be held shortly before or after the actual birthday because of school, travel, religious, or venue schedules.
