How old is Bilbo Baggins when J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings begins?

The story behind the answer

Bilbo Baggins is 111 years old when J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings begins.

The opening of The Fellowship of the Ring centers on Bilbo’s eleventy-first birthday party in the Shire. Tolkien uses the hobbit expression “eleventy-first” for 111, giving the celebration a distinctive cultural detail. Bilbo’s long life is notable even among hobbits, although it is not presented as ordinary aging.

Bilbo returned from his journey in The Hobbit with the One Ring, and the Ring helped preserve his youth for many years. He eventually gives it to Frodo during the birthday celebration, after pressure from Gandalf. Readers sometimes confuse Bilbo’s age with Frodo’s: Frodo is 33 at the start of his own adventure, the traditional age of maturity for hobbits.

Bilbo later leaves the Shire and travels to Rivendell. He survives into old age there and is eventually allowed to accompany the Ring-bearers west across the sea, an unusual honor for a mortal hobbit.
