Bilbo Baggins becomes 111 years old at his birthday party in The Lord of the Rings.
The celebration takes place at Hobbiton in the opening chapter of The Fellowship of the Ring. Bilbo’s unusually long life is linked to his possession of the One Ring, which he found during the events of The Hobbit. He shares the birthday date with Frodo, who is 33 at the same gathering.
Bilbo’s party is famous for its elaborate fireworks, large guest list, and the speech in which he announces that he is leaving Hobbiton. He then uses the Ring to disappear, though the book makes clear that the Ring does not merely make its wearer invisible in an ordinary sense.
The age is often remembered alongside the hobbits’ fondness for birthdays and feasting. Bilbo’s 111th birthday is also the narrative handoff from the lighter adventure of The Hobbit to the darker history surrounding Sauron and the Ring.
