A quinceañera traditionally celebrates a girl’s 15th birthday.
The Spanish word quinceañera refers both to the birthday celebrant and, commonly, to the celebration itself. The name comes from quince años, meaning “fifteen years.” In many families, the event marks an important transition from childhood toward young womanhood.
A quinceañera may include a formal dress, a religious service, a reception, music, dancing, and a ceremonial entrance. Customs vary widely by country, region, religion, and family, so there is no single required format.
The celebration is sometimes compared with a wedding because of its formal clothing, attendants, photography, and choreographed dances. Unlike a wedding, however, its central occasion is the celebrant’s fifteenth birthday rather than a marriage.
