How much money does a Monopoly player collect for passing GO?

The story behind the answer

In the standard Monopoly board game, a player collects $200 for passing GO.

GO is the first corner space on the board and marks the beginning of the 40-space circuit. Under the standard rules, a player receives the payment when moving past or landing on GO. The money comes from the bank, not from another player.

The $200 payment is one of Monopoly's central cash-flow rules. It gives players a regular source of income while they circulate the board, helping them pay rent, taxes, and card penalties. A player who is sent directly to Jail does not collect the payment for passing GO because that move does not take the player through the space.

Some house rules change the payment, especially when a player lands exactly on GO, but the standard amount remains $200. Chance and Community Chest cards can also direct a player to GO, and those cards may award the same amount separately when their instructions say so.
