How much is Mr. Darcy's annual income?

The story behind the answer

Mr. Darcy's annual income is £10,000. In Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Darcy's wealth is one of the first facts that defines his social position and makes him an exceptionally desirable marriage prospect. His income comes chiefly from Pemberley, his large Derbyshire estate, along with the land, rents, and investments associated with it.

The figure is discussed as “ten thousand a year,” a Regency-era way of describing annual income from property rather than a modern salary. It places Darcy far above Mr. Bennet, whose income is £2,000 a year, and above Mr. Bingley, whose income is commonly given as £4,000 or £5,000 a year in the novel's social gossip.

A common mistake is to confuse Darcy's annual income with his total fortune. The £10,000 is the yearly revenue he receives; it does not represent the full value of Pemberley or all of his family's accumulated wealth. Austen uses these income figures to show how money shapes courtship, status, independence, and family security.
