How much does the Liberty Bell weigh, according to its current listed weight?

The story behind the answer

The Liberty Bell’s current listed weight is 2,080 pounds.

The bell was commissioned in 1751 by the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly for the State House in Philadelphia, the building now known as Independence Hall. It was cast in London and arrived in Philadelphia in 1752. The inscription quotes Leviticus: “Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof.”

The bell cracked when it was first rung in Philadelphia and was subsequently recast by local founders John Pass and John Stow. Their names and the year 1753 appear on the bell. The famous visible crack was widened during the nineteenth century, allowing the bell to be displayed without attempting to ring it.

The Liberty Bell is strongly associated with American independence, but it was not the bell that announced the Declaration’s adoption in a reliably documented way. Its modern symbolic importance developed gradually, especially during the nineteenth century, and it became a major national icon by the time of the 1876 Centennial.
