Answer
2,080 pounds
The Liberty Bell weighed 2,080 pounds when it was cast.
The bell was commissioned in 1751 by the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly and cast in London by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. It arrived in Philadelphia in 1752, where it was installed in the steeple of the Pennsylvania State House. The bell's inscription comes from the biblical Book of Leviticus: “Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof.”
The bell cracked soon after its arrival and was recast twice by Philadelphia founders John Pass and John Stow. Their names appear on the bell. Its famous large crack developed later, and the bell has not been rung since the nineteenth century because further ringing could cause damage.
The Liberty Bell is strongly associated with the Declaration of Independence, but there is no contemporary evidence that it rang on July 4, 1776. Historians consider it likely that it was among Philadelphia's bells rung during the public reading on July 8.
