How many years did the Gallic Wars last?
Answer
8 years
Answer
8 years
The Gallic Wars lasted eight years, from 58 to 50 BCE. Julius Caesar led Rome’s campaigns against the peoples of Gaul, a region corresponding broadly to modern France, Belgium, Luxembourg, parts of Switzerland, and nearby areas.
The conflict began when Caesar intervened against the migration of the Helvetii in 58 BCE. Roman forces then fought a succession of Gallic and Germanic peoples, while Caesar also launched expeditions across the Rhine and into Britain. The decisive phase came in 52 BCE, when the Arvernian leader Vercingetorix united several tribes against Rome but was defeated at the Battle of Alesia.
Although resistance continued after Alesia, Roman military operations carried on through 51 and 50 BCE. That is why the conventional duration is eight years, even though historians note that the war had no single, universally agreed closing day. Caesar later presented the campaigns in Commentarii de Bello Gallico, an influential account that also served as political propaganda.
