How many years did Rama spend in exile?

The story behind the answer

Rama spent fourteen years in exile, according to the Ramayana’s central narrative.

The exile was imposed after Kaikeyi invoked two boons granted to her by King Dasharatha. She demanded that her son Bharata inherit the throne and that Rama leave Ayodhya for fourteen years. Dasharatha was devastated, but Rama accepted the decree to uphold his father’s promise.

Rama did not go alone. His wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana voluntarily joined him, and the three lived in the forest for the appointed period. Their exile sets the stage for several of the epic’s major events, including the encounter with Surpanakha, Sita’s abduction by Ravana, Rama’s alliance with Sugriva and Hanuman, and the war in Lanka.

The number is sometimes confused with other exile periods in world mythology or with later adaptations that summarize events differently. In the traditional Ramayana account, fourteen years is the canonical figure. Bharata’s role is also important: he governed in Rama’s name rather than replacing him permanently.
