Peyton Manning threw for 280 yards in Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014. The Denver Broncos quarterback completed 34 of 49 passes, but Seattle’s defense disrupted Denver’s record-setting offense throughout the game.
The matchup was played on February 2, 2014, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Seattle won 43–8, one of the most decisive Super Bowl victories in NFL history. Manning’s 34 completions were a Super Bowl record at the time, but they produced relatively modest yardage because many throws were short and Seattle limited big plays.
The game is often remembered for Seattle’s dominant defense, nicknamed the “Legion of Boom,” and for the opening safety on Denver’s first offensive snap. Manning’s 280 passing yards should not be confused with his 5,477-yard regular season total from 2013, which was an NFL record then.
